It doesn’t matter whether quality or quantity is being used as the primary criteria, it’s clear the future is bright for wrestling in Franklin County.
This was proven last weekend when nearly 90 wrestlers from Waynesboro, Greencastle and Chambersburg hit the mats to officially kick off youth wrestling season. Two tournaments — the CPWA West Novice Takedown Tournament at West Perry and Dover Youth Wrestling Tournament — served as the backdrop for competition.
Chambersburg took a large contingent of grapplers to the CPWA tourney and returned home with nine champions: Brechtlee Holmquist (6U), Landon Johnson (6U), Logan Fritz (8U), Henry Mayhugh (8U), Aries Jones (8U), Benjamin Mayhugh (10U), Jaxon Kauffman (10U), Rylan Eyer (12U), and Jack Zimmerman (12U). Greencastle also did some damage in Elliottsburg, with Carson McAtee (6U), Jude Burns (8U), Matthew Hartmire (8U), Jack Burns (10U), and Ethan Edwards (10U) all conquering their brackets.
The Dover Tournament challenged the youngsters from Waynesboro, and the team responded by crowning one champion, Eli Hind (Intermediate), while also nailing down four other runner-up finishes.
