High school scores and standings from Dec. 9-14

The road that goes through the Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division is traditionally a rugged one, but it’s nothing that the Chambersburg boys basketball team hasn’t been able to handle so far this season.

Shawn Shreffler’s Trojans kept their unbeaten season alive with a couple of big wins last week, including a victory over Cumberland Valley, the defending District 3-6A champion. At 4-0, Chambersburg is currently the No. 4-ranked team in the district power rankings.

Waynesboro’s boys basketball team is tied for first place in the Mid-Penn Colonial Division, while two other squads from the Local.News coverage area — the Smithsburg girls (4-0) and North Hagerstown boys (3-0) — are both off to undefeated starts.

In the swimming pool, Waynesboro’s boys and girls squads are both sporting 2-0 records.

Finally, seven area indoor track and field athletes were crowned champions invitationals last weekend. The Ray Schriver Invitational, hosted by Hagerstown C.C., featured local winners in Smithsburg’s Jenna Howe (300), Kayla Hawbecker (800), and Cora Gentzel (1,600), as well as North Hagerstown’s Anna Chamberlin (high jump). The Mercersburg Season Opener included a trio of area champions in Chambersburg’s Micah Gunkelman (high jump) and Sienna Scott (high jump), as well as Greencastle-Antrim’s Jaylynn Schmuck (triple jump).
