The first keep on coming for the newly-minted Chambersburg girls wrestling squad.
The Trojans took on their first tournament in program history — the Big Spring Bulldogs Tournament — last weekend and finished fourth in the field of 21 teams. Chambersburg crowned three champions: Reagan Evans (130), Makenzie Miller (155), and Aulana Stanton (170).
Chambersburg’s boys wrestling squad was no slouch, either, with Matt Mentzer’s grapplers picking up a victory over traditional Mid-Penn powerhouse Cumberland Valley, while also sending heavyweight Frank Barrientos to the medal stand with a third-place finish at last weekend’s King of the Mountain tourney at Central Mountain.
In boys basketball, Chambersburg and North Hagerstown are the top two teams out of the gates in the Local.News coverage area. The Trojans are tied for first place in the Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division, while the Hubs are off to a 5-0 start.
Greencastle-Antrim’s girls basketball team, a District 3-5A qualifier last season, is clawing its way back into contention after a losing start to the winter campaign. The Blue Devils went 2-0 last week to even their record at 4-4.
Waynesboro’s dominant season in the pool continued with both its boys and girls teams staying undefeated at 4-0 with blowout wins last week.
Finally, Smithsburg’s indoor track and field squad flexed its muscle last weekend at the Dwight Scott Invitational, hosted by Hagerstown Community College. Smithsburg’s girls finished second in the team standings and crowned two individual champions in Jenna Howe (300) and Emma Joyal (55 hurdles), while also enjoying a win from its 4×400 squad of Howe, Taylor King, Ella Fisher, and Kayla Hawbecker. The Leopard boys took fourth as a team, with Tyler Younker winning the 800 while also guiding Smithsburg’s 4×800 team to victory.
North Hagerstown was also in attendance at the Dwight Scott Invitational, with Rian Johnson (1,600) and Lauren Stine (3,200) each winning titles for the Hubs girls.
Below is a sport-by-sport look at how teams in the Local.News coverage area performed last week:
