CHAMBERSBURG – The Franklin County Metropolitan Planning Organization will host a second open house to solicit public input on the expansion of the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail. The open house will be held virtually using Microsoft Teams from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Jan. 7.

The open house is part of a feasibility study to assess the viability of extending the trail from Shippensburg south into Franklin County to connect to the Chambersburg Rail Trail. The trail is intended to provide a scenic and safe route for walking, biking and other non-motorized activities, thereby contributing positively to the overall quality of life in the region.

The Jan. 7 open house will provide the community with updates on the progress of the project, gather public input and discuss potential trail alignments. Attendees will have the opportunity to view conceptual trail designs, discuss favored amenities for the trail and review proposed alignments. Representatives from planning organization and project partners will be available to answer questions and receive feedback.

“The CVRT project is a significant initiative aimed at enhancing recreational opportunities, promoting healthy lifestyles and connecting communities within Franklin County,” said Franklin County Planning Director Quentin Clapper. “Public input is crucial to the success of this project, and we look forward to hearing from residents and stakeholders.”

The feasibility study will conclude in mid-February. The final report will include an analysis of the corridor as well as insights from various public engagement efforts, such as both open houses and a public survey conducted in the fall.
