The club swimmers from Chambersburg Memorial YMCA have proven time and time again that they are more than capable of competing on a big stage.
That trend continued on Dec. 5-8, when Chambersburg’s Chargers landed a pair of Top 10 team finishes at the 31st Arena Capital Classic, held at Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, N.C.
Chambersburg’s boys led the way, posting 948.5 points to finish second in the field of 27 teams. Two Chargers — Brett Boyer and Amir Tasker — each landed five Top 3 finishes, with Boyer winning the 500 freestyle and Tasker taking victory in the 200 freestyle. Chambersburg’s boys also got wins from Alex Kaczmark (200 butterfly) and River Strait (50 breaststroke), as well as victories from its 12U 200 and 400 medley relay teams, and its 13 and over 800 freestyle relay squad.
The Charger girls, led by a big effort from Ellery Hayes, totaled 332 points to finish eighth in the 27-team field. Hayes secured wins in the 200 breaststroke and 400 IM, to go along with a runner-up finish in the 100 breaststroke and a third-place showing in the 200 backstroke. Chambersburg’s Jessica Barley and Callie Cordell finished 2-3 in the 200 breaststroke.
For Chambersburg, the focus now shifts from the club pool to the high school arena. The Chargers are scheduled to return to competition on March 31 for the YMCA Short Course Nationals in Greensboro, N.C.
