Institute for Retired Persons offers diverse lecture series this week

CHAMBERSBURG – The Institute for Retired Persons will host another week of lectures and activities, blending in-person and virtual sessions on a variety of intriguing topics.

This week’s schedule kicks off on Monday with a Zoom lecture by Mary V. Thompson exploring the complex relationship between George Washington and the enslaved community at Mount Vernon. On Tuesday, the lectures move to in-person sessions at the Menno Haven Life Center, featuring John Ricca discussing national security issues related to adversary nations, followed by Bob O’Connor’s presentation on John Brown’s freedom fighters.

Wednesday brings another virtual lecture, with Sam Apple delving into the fascinating story of Otto Warburg and the search for connections between cancer and diet. The week concludes on Thursday with two in-person sessions at Menno Haven Life Center. Dr. Pooja Sahni will discuss advances in medical oncology, while John Maietta will explore the surprising histories behind everyday objects.

The IRP reports strong attendance for its fall programming, with an average of 34 participants for Zoom lectures and 64 for in-person sessions over the past four weeks.
